    Simplified Process for EU Citizens

    Citizens of the European Union (EU) enjoy freedom of movement within the EU and do not need a work permit to be employed in Luxembourg. They can move to the country, seek employment, and begin working without undergoing additional administrative processes.


    Requirements for Non–EU Nationals

    For those coming from outside the EU, the path to employment is more complex and requires advance planning. Here are the main steps involved:


    1. Finding an Employer and Signing a Contract

    The most challenging step for many foreign applicants is securing a job offer. With a high level of competition, especially from EU job seekers, it can be difficult to stand out. Once a job offer is made, a formal employment contract must be signed before moving forward.


    2. Medical Examination and Qualification Verification

    Before the application process can continue, foreign candidates are required to:

    • Undergo a medical examination
    • Provide proof of qualifications relevant to the job they’ve been offered (e.g., degrees, diplomas, certifications)

    3. Obtaining Legal Permissions

    After securing a contract, the foreign worker must apply for:

    • A work permit, allowing them to work for a specific employer in Luxembourg
    • An employment visa, permitting entry into the country for work purposes
    • A residence permit, allowing legal stay during the period of employment

    These documents are essential and must be secured before arriving in Luxembourg for work.


    4. Applying at the Luxembourg Consulate

    Once the employment contract is signed, the applicant must apply for a temporary residence permit and employment visa at the Luxembourg Consulate in their home country. This is a legal requirement and must be done prior to traveling.


    Special Exceptions

    Some job categories have simplified entry requirements. Nannies, caregivers, housekeepers, and circus performers are exempt from some of the standard employment procedures. However, even in these roles, a contract and visa are still necessary.
