EMPLOYMENT IN THE NETHERLANDS

    Obtaining a BSN

The BSN is automatically issued upon first registration with a Dutch municipality. When registering, individuals must choose between two options: resident or temporary resident status, depending on their intended length of stay.
Those planning to remain in the country for more than four months should register as residents.

To complete the registration process, the following documents are required:

    • A valid identification document (passport or national ID card)
    • A rental or purchase agreement for accommodation in the Netherlands

    Benefits of Resident Status

Once registered as a resident, individuals become subject to Dutch tax regulations. However, this also grants them access to several benefits, including:

    • The right to work in the Netherlands
    • Access to public services such as healthcare, education, and social security
    • The ability to purchase property and secure a mortgage
    • Eligibility for benefits such as unemployment support and social assistance

    Employment and Work Requirements

Employment in the Netherlands typically requires signing a contract outlining the terms of employment, including salary, working hours, and other conditions. Employees must also obtain health insurance, as it is mandatory for all residents.

If employed through a certified Dutch employment agency, individuals should verify whether their employer has already registered them with the tax office. In some cases, Dutch employers can apply for a BSN on behalf of their employees.

    Work Permits for Non-EU Citizens

For individuals who are not citizens of the European Union (EU), a work permit may be required. It is essential to check the specific requirements based on one’s country of origin before seeking employment in the Netherlands.

By securing a BSN and understanding employment regulations, individuals can ensure a smooth transition into life and work in the Netherlands.
